Florida Shorebirds and Black Skimmers

I took a trip to the Florida West Coast last week to get black skimmer images with fellow photographer Jim Urbach from the OCC. We were able to get images of Black-Crowned Night Herons, Black Skimmers, Willets, Laughing Gulls, Royal Terns, Brown Pelicans and more. Here are a few photos from the trip...

Green Heron

Here's a very well posed Green Heron I was able to capture on the banks of the Wekiva. However the background is a little distracting with the twigs coming out from behind his neck! I also included a shot from behind showing off the cool feather pattern.

July Competition Entry

Here are my images for the July OCC competition. The theme is pebbles & stones of which there are not many in Orlando! We don't have too many pebbles and stones laying around, mostly sand. This was another tough one trying to decide what to shoot. I decided to try the railroad tracks and focus on the stone track ballast. I picked the top image to submit. Track ballast forms the trackbed upon which railroad ties are laid and is typically made of crushed stone. Angular stones are preferable to naturally rounded ones for structural support and water runoff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Track_ballast. Watch out for the red ants!

Wekiva River Wildlife

Here are some images taken during a paddling trip on the Fourth of July near Wekiwa Springs State Park just down the street from our house. More Florida wetlands birds and other wildlife.
